Hermiston Police Department

The Hermiston (Oregon) Police Department adopted RIMS in 1998. They began with RIMS CAD, RMS, E911 Link, and Digital Imaging software in 1999. Since then they have added RIMS Property Bar Coding, State Link, and Mobile Computer software.

The Hermiston Police Department has a unique safety issue. A weapons plant with one of the nation’s largest weapons caches is located nearby. Should an evacuation of the entire area around Hermiston be necessary, secure, pervasive communications will be a must. To both protect against this worst case scenario and to improve communications capabilities on an everyday basis, Hermiston and other agencies in the area joined together to create one of the largest mesh networks for communications in the United States. For Hermiston police officers the major benefit is that it forms the communications backbone for their mobile computer system, providing high speed access to RIMS, state, and national systems.

Hermiston PD was awarded the 2006 Innovations in Technology Award from the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) for its use of technology associated with evacuation.
